Detouring is on a mission to improve the world through experiential storytelling focusing on local content creators. We are looking for creators that produce content that inspires and encourages travelers to approach their travels with a different mindset and untethered curiosity. We are building an inclusive, diverse, empathetic, curious community that radiates energetic optimism.
Detouring publishes digitally with a magazine in development. We publish written features, essays, and photo essays and are developing audio and video formats. We focus on stories that inspire travelers to have deep experiences, commonly referred to as experiential travel. We will publish traditional pieces such as top-numbered, roundups, and the occasional review, but only if they empower travelers to experience the location more deeply.
Our rates differ between the type of piece and the medium submitted. Video, photo, and audio will be assessed and proposed during submission and will be comparable to the per-word baseline.
Detouring publishes stories that cover a wide range of human adventures, including every mode of travel, cultural excursions and sustainability, outdoors & wildlife, food & drink, and diversity in the industry.
Your pitch must include a short synopsis of the story you want to tell and what media you'd like to do it in - essay, photo, video, or audio.
Your pitch should include your brief bio and relevant links to your produced content. It's ok if it's not published on a large site; a personal blog or even a guest post will do. We want to get to know you and your style.
If you've never published your work online or in print, just let us know; we love working with new creators. We will likely ask for a few samples in different styles to get you started and help us get a feel for your work.
