In 1348, the City Hall was built in the center of the square. Over the next few hundred years, several other important buildings were erected around the square, including the King's House and the Breadhouse.
In 1695, during the War of Devolution, French forces shelled and nearly destroyed the entire square. However, it was quickly rebuilt afterwards and has since been meticulously restored to its former glory. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Belgium.
